Elmwood's First Floor Main Room - including a portrait of Elmwood's builder and first occupant, Chief Justice John Louis Taylor (1769-1829), the original of which hangs in the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Elmwood is called the "House of Judges" as the first four occupants of the house were members of the North Carolina Supreme and Superior Courts.  Built on one-hundred acres as an elegant Federal side-hall home in the tradition of its forebears in the Carolina coastal towns with large, well-proportioned rooms, high ceilings and intricately carved woodwork, Elmwood acted as a small working plantation for many years.

The Grand Hallway

Elmwood was built of hand-hewn timbers, beams fourteen inches thick, and massive foundations with enormous pillars.  Ceilings vary from ten to fourteen feet, and hand carved woodwork is over the doors and windows.
